Rising Channel Seven star Abbey Gelmi will replace Jacqui Felgate as the network’s AFL presenter

Abbey Gelmi will replace Jacqui Felgate as Chief AFL Presenter for Channel Seven.

The network’s rising star, the 32-year-old former Fox Sports host, is taking on the role once tipped for Seven News reader Rebecca Madden, the Herald Sun reports.

After announcing her resignation last Sunday, Felgate, 39, said she wanted to spend more time with her young family and pursue “other opportunities”.

Granddaughter of legendary athletics star and Olympic hero Herb Elliot, Abbey has been with Channel Seven since 2018.

Since then, she has hosted various shows including House Rules and Ultimate Tag.

She also made a strong impression during Seven’s extensive coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Beijing Winter Games earlier this year.

Briefly married to Sky Racing presenter Ben Way, Abbey is now believed to be in a relationship with AFL star Kane Lambert, who plays for Richmond.

In April 2021, Abbey landed an ambassadorial role for The Star Championships, further boosting her already high profile.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia at the time, she not only expressed her excitement at returning to racing after a tough time for the industry caused by Covid-19, but also praised her colleagues at Seven.

“I’m fortunate to work with so many amazing people at Seven,” she said.

“It’s hard to pick one, but Hamish McLachlan is someone I really look up to,” she said.

“He’s first and foremost a great person, but he also gives people a platform to tell their stories, which is what I love most about my job.”

“Jason Richardson is also one of the greats. Richo uplifts the people around him and that’s something I strive to emulate as well.

It comes after Felgate, the first woman to host the AFL Brownlow Medal in 2020, bid viewers farewell this week after spending nearly nine years at Seven.

“I feel completely overwhelmed by everyone’s kind words,” the veteran journalist posted on Instagram.

‘Thanks very much. I had a wonderful career with 7News. It was more than I could have ever hoped for,” she added.

“Right now it’s time to take a break and be a mother to my wonderful daughters. I’m looking forward to whatever the future holds!
