Antonio Conte sends warning to Chelsea Romelu Lukaku who holds key to Tuchel’s title ambition – Daniel Childs

Chelsea’s rather toothless attacking performances in the defeats to Manchester City and Juventus have raised the question of Romelu Lukaku’s use so far this campaign.

The striker’s good start to the season, scoring four goals in the same number of games, justified the Blues’ record transfer to bring the Belgian back to Stamford Bridge.

However, general offensive frustrations have led to questions about how Thomas Tuchel can better use Lukaku in his system, with the striker appearing isolated in previous weeks. Former 28-year-old head coach Antonio Conte may have given the answer to a worrying question troubling Tuchel.

Giving quotes as a midweek expert at Sky Italia Conte said: “He is a very specific attacker. Bringing Lukaku into the box, he’s dangerous. However, when he starts from midfield he is incredibly fast. It is very difficult to find a player who is both a target man, but who can also run from the midfield.

“It’s also a tactical situation, a center forward who goes looking for the opposing defender, pulls him back and fires him for the one supporting him. It’s also a tactical approach used in basketball.

“The good thing about Romelu is he can hurt you anywhere. If you keep him away from the penalty area, he can kill you with his pace. If you’ve got him in the box, he’s got the physique to be a target male. ”

Conte’s quotes indicate a wider discussion among Chelsea fans as the Blues have recorded just one shot on target in their previous two games – that shot coming from Lukaku.

There was a feeling that Tuchel would have to change his approach with the arrival of such a focal point in his team.

This is already seen with the Blues lacking the intensity of pressure they had under last season, while struggling to get Lukaku into the game with opponents successfully cutting the midfield’s supply line.

Lukaku’s late failure against Juventus was infuriating for a player of his quality, but the numbers point to a larger creative problem that requires the striker to work on the inside. Scoring two goals on the same number of shots against Aston Villa in September provided proof of the forward’s elite finish, but proved unbearable.

Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Conte have enjoyed an incredible relationship at the San Siro as the Italian helped turn the Belgian into a complete striker.

He did the same against Zenit, wandering like an isolated and frustrated peripheral figure against the Russian’s low block. Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross provided him with the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock, which he did, but it’s a trend that must be broken if Chelsea are to hope to fully realize the high ceiling of Lukaku’s involvement. .

The lack of Mason Mount and Reece James in the previous two games hasn’t helped either, both proving to be two of the best creators so far in the Premier League this season with xA (Expected Assists). But the lack of numbers to help Lukaku in attack and the inventive ways to create opportunities in large areas have made Chelsea’s attack plan rather obsolete.

There is also the case of Tuchel’s belief in counter-pressing which was hampered by the arrival of Lukaku. Only Allan Sainte-Maximin and Cristiano Ronaldo have applied less pressure than Lukaku in the Premier League so far, detailed by The Athletic.

For the second half of last season, Tuchel regularly chose to field a fluid front-three that rarely involved a striker more recognizable in Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham – both of whom are no longer at the club.

“During the match there are times when Lukaku needs to be activated, but other than that he is one of the most difficult attackers to face as he can do damage in any area of the pitch. have a center forward like that you have to use it and I don’t think Chelsea have quite figured out how to use it yet. ” Conte continued on Chelsea’s problems.

“Last season, they did not have a real center forward, so they alternated positions, while Romelu is a real reference in attack. If they can figure out how to use Lukaku, then Chelsea can become the team to beat in the Champions League this season.

Conte’s work with Lukaku should be steered as he helped transform the Belgian into the all-around striker who spearheaded Inter Milan’s Scudetto triumph last season.

Tuchel has seen Lukaku’s goals before and all should not be pessimistic as the Blues enter a series of favorable matches. But making more use of the world-class man is key to Chelsea’s title ambitions, how Tuchel tackles this in the coming weeks will be indicative of those ambitions.
