Billy Gilmour: Norwich signs Chelsea midfielder on season-long loan | Football news

Norwich has signed Chelsea and Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old made 11 appearances for Chelsea last season as he finished fourth in the Premier League and won his second Champions League title.

Gilmour also burst onto the international stage at Euro 2020, producing a man of the match performance on his Scotland debut in the goalless draw against England at Wembley.

“I am very excited to be here,” said the midfielder.

“I can’t wait for the season to come. I couldn’t wait to come here, play as much as possible and help Norwich City compete in the Premier League.”

Gilmour, who has just completed a 10-day period of self-isolation after testing positive for Covid-19 while in Scotland, said a discussion with Norwich head coach Daniel Farke , had convinced him to join the Canaries.

“He called me and we had a good discussion about how he wants to play and how he sees me fit in,” he added.

“All he said was what I wanted to do on the pitch, drop the ball and play some good football. He spoke very well about his team and I wanted to come here and help.

“There are some really exciting times to come, come in for the preseason and see all the guys.

Chelsea see the youngster’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge but see the move to the Canaries as ideal in order to earn regular first-team football next season.

Farke described Gilmour as a “perfect fit” for Norwich both as a footballer and in relation to his character.

“We are really happy to have brought Billy in. We have to say a big thank you to Chelsea and everyone who helped make this deal come true,” said Farke.

“I think it’s helped that in the past we’ve shown that young players with potential are in good hands here at Norwich City.”

Norwich’s return to the Premier League will begin with Liverpool’s visit to Carrow Road on the opening day of the season, live on Air sports.
