Man Utd branded ‘desperate’ by Gary Neville as fellow legend Roy Keane tears up at club over Marko Arnautovic transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane have torn the club apart for their “desperate” pursuit of striker Marko Arnautovic.

New manager Erik ten Hag started life in the Premier League with a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

And amid the gloomy mood around Old Trafford was a report that the club were considering trying to sign 33-year-old former West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic.

It has been claimed live on air that United saw an initial offer rejected by Serie A side Bologna as they considered the possibility of replacing a disgruntled Cristiano Ronaldo.

After hearing about United’s failed bid for the Austrian, Neville interrupted Sky presenter Dave Jones to say: “The first thing you do when the phone rings from Manchester United is reject the offer.

“The reality is you know very well, they lost this game today, they’re actually negotiating in an even worse position than yesterday and that’s a bigger problem for them.”

When pressed on Arnautovic, Neville then added: “We’ve seen it with Falcao, Ibrahimovic, Cavani, Ighalo – these desperate, sort of experienced signings.

“We’ve seen it now for eight or 10 years, it’s a pattern, it happens over and over again.

“We don’t even get mad anymore, we don’t even get animated about it anymore. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even want to comment on it anymore.”

Keane then backed Neville’s view relying on his former club’s current transfer policy.

The Irishman said: “Who makes these decisions? Who decides which players go in?

“They’re talking about Darren Fletcher as technical director, they have a new coach, obviously John Murtough is involved, there’s a new general manager, there’s talk of moving back to Alex Ferguson and David Gill.

“My God, what’s going on?

“It’s good to have the money, you have to bring in the right players with the right character.”

Neville then ended the segment with a damning accusation of United’s lack of planning.

He added: “The money needed to rebuild this team this summer…they knew six months ago, eight months ago, 12 months ago that it would have to be invested in this summer.

“All those players who were leaving like Mata and Matic and all the others who left.

“They knew they had a problem with Martial that hadn’t been imagined in the past, Cristiano coming in at the end, Cavani leaving, obviously the situation with Greenwood not being with the club anymore.

“All these things have been known for a long time, it’s not like it hits them now.”
