Pivotel wants to bring internet connectivity to Australian skies

Rural and remote communications solutions provider Pivotel plans to make Australia one of the first countries after the European aviation network to benefit from high-speed connectivity in the sky.

Pivotel has signed a memorandum of understanding with SkyFive, an in-flight connectivity company located in Germany, to evaluate and test SkyFive’s Direct-Air-To-Ground (DA2G) solution.

As part of the agreement, Pivotel will deploy a DA2G network powered by Nokia’s eNodeB technology and NEC’s iPasolink Microwave to provide approximately 50,000 square kilometers of coverage between Dubbo and Sydney.

The test will also cover Flightcell’s on-board terminal. He will highlight how different technologies work together to transform the experience of air travelers, in-flight operations and enable data-intensive applications for public safety aviation.

Until now, providing low latency broadband connectivity for commercial airliners, private planes and helicopters has been a challenge. Traditional cellular networks are oriented towards the ground and are not optimized for airborne operation, while satellite solutions offer limited bandwidth at slower speeds with expensive data.

Skyfive’s technology fills this gap with its DA2G land mobile networks optimized for aerial coverage and covers the specific technical challenges associated with altitude and speed.

The networks provide data speeds of up to 100 Mbps with less than 50 milliseconds of true end-to-end latency while also providing the ability to connect ground services at airports or helipads.

Airlines and commercial agencies are interested in participating in the trial, including the Royal Flying Doctors Service (south-eastern section). The service will provide users with connectivity access to their private network while enabling real-time internet applications such as streaming high-definition video, transmission of critical biometric data to hospitals, and other patient-focused services. data.

“Our technical teams are working together to develop the ecosystem of the Oceania region in order to bring this exceptional technical solution to the aviation industry,” said Peter Bolger, CEO of Pivotel.

“With the world’s fastest growing aircraft broadband connectivity solution, we are committed to keeping the people of Oceania at the cutting edge of technology and are confident that they will benefit from the global reach, the SkyFive’s expertise and agility to create new value for local aviation. industry and its customers, ”comments SkyFive APAC Business Development Director Zoltan Losteiner.

In Europe, the European Aviation Network (EAN) currently covers 35 countries and uses Nokia solutions and SkyFive technology to provide data services to passengers and crew traveling in high altitude jets.

Recently, Skyfive launched a POC network in New Zealand where public safety use cases are being demonstrated.

To make the trial possible, Pivotel and Skyfive have obtained a scientific spectrum license in the proposed A2G frequency band. The use of this dedicated radio frequency spectrum is the key factor for the performance and data security of DA2G communications.

Once the trial is successful, Pivotel plans to deploy a nationwide DA2G network across Australia.
