Police launch investigation after BBC’s Nicky Campbell claims abuse at private school | UK News

A police investigation is underway at a prestigious school after BBC presenter Nicky Campbell said he suffered abuse while there.

The broadcaster claimed he was “badly beaten” at the Edinburgh Academy in the 1970s.

Police Scotland said the investigation was “ongoing and ongoing” and a dedicated team was looking into the allegations.

A spokesperson said: “While investigating child abuse, particularly non-recent offences, can be complex and difficult, anyone who reports this type of crime can be assured that we will listen and investigate. on all reports, regardless of when these offenses occurred or who committed them.

“If you have been the victim of child abuse or know someone who may have been the victim of child abuse, please call Police Scotland on 101.”

Campbell made the claims during an episode of his BBC Different podcast, saying the experience had a “profound effect on my life”.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the broadcaster said: “I was badly beaten at school by a teacher who was a figurehead in the scripture union.

“My mum went as far as she could and got a creeping apology from (the man involved) but it was basically a rock wall and it was smothered by the school.

“It was a different time and it marked me all my life.”

The school said it “deeply” regrets the allegations and has “wholeheartedly” apologized to those involved.

In a statement released earlier, the school said: “We have worked closely with the relevant authorities, including Police Scotland, as part of their investigations and would like to provide reassurance that things have changed dramatically since the 1970s.

“The Academy has strong measures in place to protect children at school, with child protection training now at the heart of the Academy’s ethos.”
