A fire broke out at a petrochemical plant in Shanghai and several explosions caused a massive blaze with emergency services on site and evacuations taking place.
Fire crews tackle a massive blaze at a petrochemical plant in Shanghai, with the sky lit up with flames following reports of an explosion.
Evacuations took place at the facility in Jinshan District after a fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning, firefighters said.
Shanghai Petrochemical Company confirmed that the fire started just after 4 a.m. local time and that an emergency plan was immediately implemented.
Several areas of the facility appear to be on fire while to date no injuries have been reported.
It is reported that there were several explosions leading to the fires.
Many people took to social media to show the flames ripping through the chemical plant in the southwest of the city, while residents also said how they felt their homes tremble from the force of the explosions.
People fled the area amid chaos caused by the huge fire which led to traffic jams.
Shanghai Fire Protection News reportedly said, “A fire broke out at the ethylene glycol plant of a petrochemical company on Long’an East Road, Jinshan District, Shanghai.
“After receiving the alarm, the 119 municipal command center quickly dispatched rescue forces such as Jinshan and Fengxian to the chemical industry area.
“Crews are currently at the site tackling the fire.”
With the blaze burning for several hours, the sky over Shanghai is now black from clouds of smoke, according to social media videos from the city.
