SKY takes action against intentional fiber cutting incidents in Cebu

Following several reports from Cebu-based SKY subscribers on the disruption of their cable and internet services, which were caused by intentional fiber cut incidences, SKY assures its valued subscribers that it will restore the interrupted connection in multiple operating areas as soon as possible as the company is working closely with local government units in dealing with the problem.

We and our subscribers have been victims of attackers who steal and resell cables for profit or recklessly cut and damage our cables without regard to the disruption this causes to our internet and cable service,” says Ruel Hechanova , Business Unit of SKY. Reported incidents of intentional fiber optic cuts caused delays to SKY’s repair and maintenance efforts in Cebu following the onslaught of Typhoon Odette, and disrupted SKY’s recently restored services in some areas.

Intentional fiber cuts occur when perpetrators cut cables and sell the stolen wires for profit. Under Republic Act 10515 or the Cable Theft Act, intentional fiber cutting is illegal and punishable by two to five years in prison or heavy fines at the discretion of the court .

SKY took immediate action to restore cable and internet services in Cebu and continues to seek legal proceedings to prosecute the said perpetrators.

“We regret any inconvenience experienced by our SKY subscribers as a result of these recent events. We are responding to concerns and discussing preventive measures that can be implemented with the relevant local government,” Hechanova said.
