How to lower your energy bills

As Brits look for ways to cut costs, they’ve been warned not to turn off their routers at night.

The UK’s major internet service providers (ISPs) including Sky, BT and Virgin have warned households to keep routers on 24/7 or risk missing important security updates.

Aman Bhatti, Director of Proposals for Sky Broadband, told the Express“We know our routers are put to the test during the day – whether it’s video calls, streaming the latest show, or playing online games. That’s why our routers run the firmware update overnight, to avoid unnecessary downtime during the day.

“Turning off your router overnight can affect automatic software updates and optimizations, which can impact the overall performance, speed, and stability of your broadband. Other connected devices in the home that are connected to your router will also be affected by delayed updates.

“All of our current hubs are EU Eco-design regulation approved, which means no excessive power consumption is used.”

BT is issuing a similar warning to customers, saying: “It’s important to make sure you leave your hub on and connected at all times. This will allow us to give you the fastest and most stable service, and ensure that your hub is kept up to date. ”
